John Mulaney didn’t hold back when taking a jab at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s struggles with Netflix during a star-studded event in Los Angeles. While promoting his upcoming live talk show, Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney, at Netflix’s Next on Netflix event Wednesday at the Egyptian Theatre, the comedian made a sharp joke about the royal couple’s multimillion-dollar deal with the streaming giant.
Teasing the format of his new show, Mulaney quipped, “This will be the one place where you could see Arnold Schwarzenegger sitting next to Nikki Glaser, sitting next to a family therapist, with music by Mannequin Pussy.”
The Saturday Night Live alum, whose Netflix show debuts March 12, also praised the company for taking a chance on him, adding, “This is a really fun experiment.” Then, with perfect comedic timing, he delivered the punchline:
“Not since Harry and Meghan has Netflix given more money to someone without a specific plan.”
The joke was a clear nod to the Sussexes’ five-year deal with Netflix, reportedly worth $100 million, which they signed in 2020 to develop original content. While their first project, the 2022 docuseries Harry & Meghan, provided a behind-the-scenes look at their love story and royal exit, their other planned ventures have struggled. Their animated series Pearl was scrapped before release, and their latest docuseries, Polo, failed to gain traction, according to InTouch Weekly.
A source previously told Page Six that Netflix expected Harry and Meghan to become major Hollywood power players. However, industry insiders say pressure is mounting for them to deliver something that justifies their massive deal.
Meanwhile, Markle is gearing up for the launch of her new lifestyle series, With Love, Meghan, set to premiere on March 4. The show will showcase her take on gardening, cooking, entertaining, and more while doubling as a platform for her American Riviera Orchard brand. Originally slated for a January 15 debut, the release was pushed back due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.
Mulaney’s set was met with laughter from an audience packed with A-list names, including Ben Affleck and Tina Fey, proving once again that his sharp wit and fearless humor remain a Hollywood favorite.
