Apple has agreed to a $95 million settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit accusing its virtual assistant, Siri, of recording private conversations without user consent. Filed in 2019, the lawsuit alleged that Siri was inadvertently activated, capturing confidential dialogues that could be shared with third parties, including advertisers.
The settlement, pending court approval, allows U.S. users who owned Siri-enabled devices between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, to claim up to $20 per device, with a maximum of five devices per person. While agreeing to the settlement, Apple denies any wrongdoing.
In response to the concerns raised, Apple has pledged to confirm the deletion of Siri recordings made before October 2019 and to provide clear instructions on how users can opt in or out of contributing to the virtual assistant’s improvement.
