Recently, the UK has been the scene of rare sightings of lenticular clouds, known as “UFO clouds” because of their flying saucer-like appearance. These cloud formations have been observed in several northern regions of the country, including Gateshead, Newcastle, Cumbria and Scotland.
Lenticular clouds form when the air is stable and the winds blow over hills and mountains in similar directions, creating air waves which, by condensing the moisture, result in these lenticular formations.
Although these clouds are a natural phenomenon, they have been associated with UFO sightings due to their unusual appearance. Pilots generally avoid flying near them due to the turbulence they can cause.
For meteorology and sky watching enthusiasts, lenticular clouds offer a unique opportunity to witness an impressive atmospheric phenomenon.
